Prayer Intelligence
We do not hesitate to take vitamins to improve our health. Some of us. regularly
go to the gym for a workout to improve our physical health and stamina.
The beautician, hairstylist and tailor are ready to refine our good looks.
Butwhat we seldom try to improve our approach to davening, our daily prayers.
True, we open the siddur say the words, some tefilas with more kavono, concentration,
some with less, and close the book with a kiss. However, if tomorrow and
the next day are the same as today, what have we accomplished?
I recently came across a sefer titled "Va'ani Tefila" authored
by Rabbi Shlomo Goldhaber of Jerusalem that can readily serve as our daily
"nutrient" to enhance our prayers. Written in easy to follow Hebrew,
the sefer follows the sequence of the siddur and explains each portion in
a clear concise manner. Gematriot, numerologies, acronyms and word comparisons
are just some of the tools Rabbi Goldhaber uses to reveal the hidden beauty
of our national treasure - the siddur.
In addition to his own fascinating chiddushim (original reflections) the author has gleaned unique interpretations and explanations on the prayers from the writings of our great sages of previous generations such as Rabbi Akiva Eiger, the Chasam Sofer and the Kotzker Rebbe. The author reviews both weekly and Shabbat prayers, as well as tefilot of Yom Tov and the Days of Awe. The author also presents his original interpretations on Shir Hashirim and Pirkei Avot. The sefer concludes with a number of fascinating personal stories that the author experienced highlighting the power of prayer.
Leading Rabbis, Roshei Yeshivos and Chassidishe Rebbes have given the sefer their letters of approbation. Rabbi Goldhaber has for the past 26 years headed the world renown Mifal Torah Vodaath, a premier outreach and educational organization which has brought literally thousands of youngsters back to the path of Torah and Mitzvot. Many of the Torah thoughts presented originated during his discussion with the Mifal students.
